At FoodPrime, we are committed to solving the problem of world hunger and the challenge of food waste via our App that connect users with people who have surplus or left-over food in their neighbourhood.
United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) estimate that about 821 million people of the 7.16 billion people in the world were suffering from chronic undernourishment. Almost all the hungry people live in lower-middle-income countries - Africa having the highest prevalence and Asia having the highest number. Globally, 150 million under-five-year old were estimated to be stunted with about half and one-third living in Asia and Africa respectively.
At the same time, statistic shows that the world produces enough food to feed everyone. The major problem been that people do not have sufficient income to purchase enough food or access nutritious food.
Ironically, one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year – approximately 1.3 billion tonnes – gets lost or wasted according to FAO. The food currently loss in Africa, Europe and Latin America could feed 300 million, 200 million and 300 million people respectively. The lost and waste amount to roughly US$ 680 billion in industrialized countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries.
It is against this backdrop that FoodPrime was founded.
Leveraging on the power of mobile technology, we envision a world free of hunger and malnutrition where the poor and vulnerable have access to sufficient food all year round and where new homes are found for surplus or left-over food rather than windup in landfills and become one of the largest contributor to greenhouse gases.
